5 SPF Creams That Work For Darker Skin Tones

There is a myth that darker-skinned people skin tone don’t need sun protection because their skin naturally produces a healthy amount of melanin. While healthy melanin production is wonderful, let’s correct this myth real quick–everyone, and we mean everyone, needs sun protection.

This is especially true when you consider the effects of climate change and the sun burning hotter than it ever has. If you don’t think that you are at risk of developing melanoma that eventually leads to skin cancer, perhaps we can convince you with another reason.

The sun can cause you to age significantly over time. Studies have shown that the sun can cause photodamage. According to New Jersey-based dermatologist, Jeanine Downie, M.D.,

“Photodamage in people of color will lead to sagging of the skin, loss of volume from the face, and hyperpigmentation”

That said, for darker-skinned people, trying to find SPF that isn’t toxic and doesn’t make one look like a Gross sister from the early 2000’s cartoon, The Proud Family, can be a bit of a minefield.

If you’ve tried the garden-variety, zinc-based, SPF creams on the market and shrieked in horror when you couldn’t get the purple-ish, white cast to blend in with your skin, then you know you exactly what we are talking about.

We’ve scoured high and low to bring you tried and tested SPF creams, gels and lotions that won’t leave a white cast.
